Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to the most common queries about the registry.

What is an NZBN?
An NZBN (New Zealand Business Number) is a unique 13-digit identifier issued to every registered business entity operating in New Zealand. It is the primary key for finding a company in this registry.
How do I search the registry?
Use the Public Search bar above. You can search by company name, NZBN, or FSP licence number. Partial matches are supported — type any part of a name and we will surface relevant matches instantly.
How current is the data?
Records are updated as filings and changes are received from registered entities. The “Last Annual Return” date on each record shows the most recent compliance filing, so you can gauge how fresh the information is.
What does each status mean?
ACTIVE — the entity is in good standing.
SUSPENDED — temporarily paused, awaiting compliance.
INACTIVE — no longer trading but still on the register.
STRUCK OFF — formally removed from the register.
Can I register my business through this portal?
Yes. Visit the Register your business page to begin a new application. We will review your submission and contact you with the next steps.
Who can see my registered company details?
All registered entity details are public information by default, visible to anyone searching the registry. This transparency is a core principle of public corporate registers and supports trust between businesses, investors, and the public.

“Before any new partnership goes ahead, I run the other party through the registry. Director details, registered office, last annual return. All in one place. What used to take days of back-and-forth now takes a couple of minutes.”
